Designer Spotlight: MessQueen New York

-

         WHO is MessQueen New York?
MessQueen New York is a young girl in her 20's, very hip and always looking for something that is unique… what's new and hot.

What is your biggest inspiration/ where do you get your inspiration from?
My biggest inspiration comes from everywhere.  Brooklyn is my inspiration. The graffiti, people, underground art scene, street art, fashion, bold colors and the city. My everyday life/ what I see and interpret it into my designs.

Who is your favorite designer(s) and why?
I love Jean Paul Gaultier. Loving his style, the plaids, etc.  Carrie Mundane is another designer I like who has a men's line / men’s wear called "Cassette Playa".  I like the way she is able to mix her colors and prints, which also inspired me to do that in a similar way with my designs.

What do you think is your strengths and weaknesses in the art of fashion?
Strength- I like to think outside the box. I don’t like to do what everyone else is doing.
Weakness- taking critiques and organizing more photo shoots.

How are your clothes different from the other designer?
The quality and the fit defines my clothing (I design for women who have curves). I don't want to sell clothes that look cool on the hanger but the fit is all wrong on my clients.

What is your favorite season for fashion?
Fall, I like to layer but not too much. Fall is perfect for a hoodie, a vest, leggings, T-shirt and my sneakers.

What is the best perk in being a designer?
Being able to make your own clothes and being the first person to wear it.

What is one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?
It is not as easy as people may think.  I would say to do your research before you spend a lot of money. Surround yourself with a good support team, taking advice and take advantage of your work area. I took a lot of advantage of the labs at my school while working overnight.
